It’s alarming to read that 1 in 3 brits are now considered to be overweight, with half of us predicted to be obese by 2045!

Obesity is already costing the NHS around £10 billion every year, and with no sign of this improving the strain it will cause on our healthcare system in the future will be devastating.

According to internet statistics ‘Do I qualify for a Gastric Band on the NHS’ is one of the most frequently asked questions, and with the strict criteria’s for eligibility, there have been cases where overweight people purposely put on weight so they can have the life-changing operation!

Not only can obesity affect the quality of life, but it can also lead to potentially life-threatening health conditions such as:

– Type 2 Diabetes

– Coronary Heart Disease

– Higher risk of having a stroke

– Bowl, Pancreatic, Kidney, Liver and Stomach Cancer

What is worrying is that a quarter of children in the UK aged between 2 and 10 years old are overweight or classed as obese, and it is said that these children are more likely to become overweight adults.

You can check to see where you sit on the scale, by checking your Body Mass Index (BMI) with the NHS BMI calculator:

BMI isn’t, of course, accurate measurement for everyone – as muscle mass isn’t taken into consideration, however, it’s good to understand what is classed as a healthy weight for your height and age.

If you are heading into the danger zone, simple changes to your diet and an increase in exercise will help. Even small steps in your daily routine will have benefit:

– Take the stairs instead of the lift

– Have a walking meeting instead of sitting

– Walk the kids to school instead of driving

– Getting off public transport a stop or two early

If you are already exercising, try changing your routine, start a new challenge or take up a new class to keep you engaged.

At Fuell, We motivate our users every day with themed exercise challenges, rewards, team v team challenges and lots of other ways to make exercise more fun, accessible and part of daily life.
